"Raaj meh raaj, jog meh jogi"

Sher - e - Punjab
Maharaja Ranjit Singhji

(Barsi: June, 2001)
(1780 - 1839)

Raaj meh raaj:
He was brave, right from his childhood.
At the young age of 11, he won his first battle.
He united all Sikh warriors under a single banner.
At the age of 21, he was crowned as the first Maharaja of Punjab.
He built a large army to protect his kingdom.
Even the British choose to stay away from Punjab during his time.

Jog meh jogi:
He considered Guru Nanak as the True King, and himself as a sevak.
He never sat on the throne and did not wear a crown.
Though he was a king, he was always humble.
He readily accepted punishment for his mistakes.
He renovated the Golden temple and other historic Gurudwaras.
Coins started by him had Guru Nanak's name on them, but did not have any mention of his name.
To know the true situation of his people, he disguised himself and used to walk in his kingdom at night.

Always remember :
A true Sikh
Is a combination of
Sainthood and Royalty,
Like, Maharaja Ranjit Singhji.
